The $1.5 million Port Phillip Public Place CCTV Expansion Project was promised during the federal election last year.
The funding will increase public place CCTV coverage across Port Phillip through the installation of new systems in key retail precincts, namely Bay Street in Port Melbourne, Clarendon Street in South Melbourne, and Carlisle Street in Balaclava.
These new systems will complement the existing CCTV network across St Kilda, which is currently being renewed by Port Phillip.
The project also includes the purchase of a new mobile CCTV trailer to provide additional surveillance in areas facing increased antisocial behaviour.
Josh Burns MP said the project is about ensuring community members feel safe when out in our vibrant high streets and shopping precincts.
“We’re delivering on our election commitment to invest in CCTV networks in Port Phillip.”
Mayor Alex Makin said the funding will expand the public place CCTV network and strengthen safety across some of the city’s busiest and most vibrant precincts.
“This grant is a major boost for community safety in Port Phillip and a testament to the strong partnerships that make our city safer and more welcoming.”
“Port Phillip will work with Victoria Police to ensure these new systems support law enforcement in their vital work to protect our community.”
