Acland’s vital signs are improving

From despair to hope, an Acland local sees more bright lights ahead

It seems that everyone has an opinion about Acland Street. And why not, it’s a vital artery in the beating heart of St Kilda for locals, visitors and traders. Rocco shares about his journey from despair, frustration through to more glimmers of hope for this treasured thoroughfare.

Yes, not so long ago I was disheartened about the state of Acland Street. I was in despair and disappointed.
I found that speaking up and telling the truth is not always popular in the community…
But now I am pleased to report that there are more signs of co-operation on real solutions to the trickiest problems facing our beloved Acland Street.
But first, appreciation for the everyday heroes
I’ve witnessed Council local laws officers working with police to make a difference.
Let me say right up front, the Local Laws team are being fantastic and we need more of them moving forward. I’ve seen local laws officers working closely with the police, and that’s made a very positive difference.
Our community needs more resources to help the rough sleepers and those that need mental health support. It’s got to be a team effort – and that includes more help from State Government.
New shops and businesses are beacons
It’s not just fairy lights that are brightening the Acland strip. It feels like there’s a new place to explore popping up almost every week. Here’s just a sample that have joined the strip and surrounds this year:
Humble Spud: an Irish  traditional chipper
POP! Tea: traditional Taiwanese bubble milk tea, a variety of fruit teas
Loud Mouth: Two Floors, music, crafted cocktails & delicious bites
Jekyll & Hyde: old-school tavern, where hearty British fusion cuisine pairs flawlessly with cold pints poured to perfection.
Sorsi e Morsi new extension: Neighbourhood Italian restaurant
Yo-Bar: range of 10 frozen yoghurt flavours including Açai and Maqui as well as plenty of seasonal flavours
Oakberry Acai: organic açaí recipe. açaí bowls and smoothies
Also new new in Acland court
Reformer Pilates Studio
Health bites: matcha tea and coffee (homemade healthy delicious cookies)

New Vietnamese eatery coming soon next to Vodafone
Lights, camera, parking!
The volunteers from Acland Street Village Business Association and Council have done a fabulous job lighting up the street with fairy lights making it look more inviting.
It would be good if Council invested in better signage about parking in the area and so visitors know where to park especially during the week.

We can all do our bit by supporting local businesses. Bring your trade, bring your friends over winter especially – there is more to enjoy than watching TV!
