Newly elected Cr Libby Buckingham will move a motion at the next Council meeting seeking a co-ordinated community response to community safety issues.
Cr Buckingham’s motion calls for a ‘round table’ approach to improving community safety by getting council, police and community agencies working better together to address community concerns.
The motion calls for an examination current situation and a review of the models used to address community safety issues on our high streets. It foreshadows greater co-operation with the police and seeks advice from the Police Commission on how any changes to the local laws would be used and work in practice.
Amongst other things, the motion says that opportunities for the public to share their lived experiences in relation to community safety should be incorporated into the update of City of Port Phillip’s Community Safety plan which is scheduled for next year.
