Every vote and every preference counts

Welcome to unpredictable politics. For the first time, our local seat of Macnamara is a genuine three-way contest, with green, red, or even blue victory possible.

The most calculating observers (the bookies) rate the ALP as the favourite at $1.95 to win, followed by the Greens at $2.40 and the Liberals at $5.00.

But what happens in the final count is anybody’s bet.

Questions only your vote can answer

Here are some of the questions that only local voters can answer.

How many Jewish voters will change their vote based on events in the Middle East? Will the apparent anger and disappointment translate to a non-Labor vote in the privacy of the ballot box?

How many uncommitted voters, alarmed by Trump turbulence, will be wary of a minority government and swing to a steady-as-you-go Labor vote?

How many uncommitted voters have lost belief in State Labor and are keen to see some change, prompting a drift to the Federal Liberals?

But one thing is for sure

How you vote, including your preferences, is crucial in the seat of Macnamara, which must now be considered marginal Labor/Green if not an extraordinary pick up by the Liberals.

ABC election analyst Antony Green says an accurate margin for Macnamara, based on the three candidate percentages, would be Labor 0.4 percent ahead of the Greens.

That’s 400 votes. Yours might be one of them.
