Former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes declared his love for the Pride Centre on a spontaneous visit last week during a tour promoting is memoir Unloveable. Cr Serge Thomann is a fan and he got to show off the Centre on his first day as Councillor for St Kilda Ward. This is his report …

When Darren Hayes, aged 15, saw Michael Jackson perform live for the first time in Brisbane where he lived, he realised that music was his calling and performing a way to share powerful messages. I was fortunate to be there photographing Michael. Many years later, Darren and I connected over this shared experience and have kept in touch since.

I’ve always hoped Darren could visit the Victorian Pride Centre. Last year, during his tour, it wasn’t possible, but now, while promoting his incredible and heartfelt book “Unloveable” that I encourage everyone to read, he found time to stop by. His visit included a tour of the centre and a morning coffee with a few people involved in its creation or keen to meet Darren. It coincided with my first day as the new Councillor for St Kilda. What a great start!

As one of the most prominent LGBTQ+ figures in Australia, Darren’s advocacy for equality is truly inspiring. His latest album, Homosexual, like his book reflects his personal journey of coming to terms with his identity, making his visit to the Pride Centre even more meaningful.

Darren was very impressed by the centre and shared insights from his time living in San Francisco, home to one of the best LGBTQI+ centres in the world. He noted how unique and special our Pride Centre is and expressed his admiration, even volunteering an idea when visiting the rooftop: “This is a fantastic place—I’d love to do something here!” He then suggested an acoustic gig, and I’ll make sure it happens during his next visit to Melbourne.

It would be an incredible experience to celebrate Darren and his contribution to our community. Darren, you are deeply loved and admired by so many, and your visit to the Pride Centre means so much to all in Melbourne especially to those who were involved in making the Pride Centre happen! You are welcome back anytime!
