Housing emergency gets the cold shoulder

A last ditch bid to declare a housing emergency failed to get a majority.

Despite a three-night vigil sleeping outside St Kilda Town, a motion from ALP Cr Robbie Nyaguy to declare a housing emergency failed to get a majority at the last Council meeting before entering the pre-election caretaker period.

Before the vote, a determined Cr Nyaguy told TWiSK he braved the big weather because he felt Council hadn’t done enough to address the housing crisis.

‘As the only renter on Council and knowing that about half our residents are renters, I called for Council to declare a housing emergency and do more to support renters,’ he said.

But the bid fell short of a majority

Mayor Cunsolo joined Crs Bond, Clarke, Pearl and Sirakoff to reject the motion.

The housing emergency motion was supported by Crs Martin, Crawford, Baxter and Nyaguy.
