Second St Kilda ‘Cocoon’ for Young Women

‘Bridge It’ has secured a second property in St Kilda that will become long-term safe housing for young women. However, trade and industry support is now needed to prepare the new property for residents.

Coinciding with Youth Homelessness Week (4 – 10 August), Bridge It has announced plans for a second St Kilda-based ‘Cocoon’—safe, long-term housing and support for young women and gender-diverse people impacted by homelessness and the out-of-home-care system.

This 15-studio apartment building in St Kilda follows the success of the original Cocoon launched in 2021 in collaboration with community housing provider HousingFirst.

The ‘Cocoon’ model includes lived experience mentoring, skills development such as budgeting and cooking, wellness activities like acupuncture and naturopathy, and community experiences including trips to the zoo and birthday celebrations.

Cocoon #2 has been made possible thanks to the generosity of a Melbourne couple who purchased the property and are leasing it to Bridge It for just $1 per year for the next 20 years.

Help Needed to Get it Ready for First Residents

Bridge It is calling on the building and construction sector to help bring the vision of Cocoon #2 to life. They are seeking partners across the trades and construction industries to donate skills, materials, and labor to ensure the new Cocoon is fit-for-purpose, beautiful, and safe.
