Vocal locals start young in St Kilda

Cars tooted, drivers waved, and kids chanted outside St Kilda Primary School last Monday in support of their call for a hall.

Left stranded without a school hall for over five years, the students and parents have learned tough lessons about how politics works and how decisions are made.

The Victorian State Government demolished the former indoor hall as part of capital works in 2020 but has so far failed to deliver on its promise to fund a new hall.

While funding for state schools lies with the state government, the junior vocal locals have seized the opportunity to raise their case during the Federal election campaign. And it is clear that some politicians are listening.

The Greens, at both the state and federal level, have pledged to support $10 million for the hall.

The freshly elected Rachel Westaway, Liberal MP for Prahran (which includes the school), is backing the call too.

“During the recent Prahran by-election, the Liberal Party committed to fund the building of this new hall,” she told TWiSK.

“As the local State Member of Parliament, I will continue to advocate for the immediate funding and building of this hall that means so much to the local community. I trust that the Labor government will listen and fund this project in the forthcoming state budget. If they fail to do so, the Liberal Party remains committed to delivering the project when it returns to government,” she said.

Local Federal MP Josh Burns was at the rally and supports the call for a new hall. But he’s in the wrong parliament.
