Wall repair closes traffic lane

Canterbury Road wall fix could take six months severely disrupting traffic heading towards Fitzroy Street.

A retaining wall on Canterbury Road, near the intersection of Fitzroy Street, has been deemed structurally unsound, leading to significant traffic disruptions and safety measures. The wall, which is privately owned, has required the installation of protective barriers to ensure public safety due to its condition and potential for collapse. These barriers were put in place on 25 November.

The safety measures include the temporary closure of one vehicle lane, the bike lane, and the footpath, causing long delays and traffic congestion in the surrounding streets. The owner’s corporation is currently working towards rebuilding the retaining wall. The wall is also listed with Heritage Victoria, and the property owners are collaborating with heritage experts to ensure that the repair respects its historical value.

Work on the retaining wall is expected to take approximately six months, with completion anticipated around May 2026. During this period, detours will be in place for cyclists and pedestrians to navigate the affected area.
