Over the course of my door-knocking campaign, I’ve spoken to countless residents, and several key issues have come up repeatedly.
Here’s a summary of what I learned and how I plan to address these concerns if elected to the City of Port Phillip Council:
1. Keep Weekly Rubbish Collection
The council’s plan to move to fortnightly waste collection in 2025 has frustrated many residents.
I’m committed to fighting this change. Weekly collections are essential for keeping our streets clean and preventing issues like overflowing bins and smelly neighbourhoods
2. Road and Street Maintenance
The condition of our roads is a major concern, with potholes and poor drainage causing inconvenience and safety risks.
I will work with the council to prioritise regular inspections and timely repairs of potholes. I will also push for improved drainage systems to prevent water pooling on roads, reducing long-term damage and ensuring safer streets.
3. Cleaner Streets (Graffiti and Littering)
Residents are fed up with graffiti and littering issues.
I will promote anti-graffiti initiatives such as artist murals in hotspot areas and increase rubbish collection points.
I will also advocate for stricter enforcement of littering fines and community cleanup programs to maintain cleaner streets.
4. Improving Public Safety
I’ll advocate for better street lighting and more CCTV to deter crime and help people feel safer in their neighbourhoods.
Collaborating with local authorities will be a priority to reduce crime and create a secure environment for all.
5. Dog-Friendly Parks
Pet owners have expressed a desire for better dog-friendly amenities in parks, such as water fountains, dog poo bags, and larger green spaces.
I’ll push for well-maintained and safe spaces for dogs and their owners to enjoy.
6. Strong Fiscal Oversight
Many residents are frustrated with how council funds are being used, with too many projects facing cost blowouts and delays.
I’ll ensure fiscal responsibility so every dollar is spent wisely, delivering real benefits to the community.
I believe in practical solutions that make a real impact.
No politics, just action. Together, we can make Montague a place we’re all proud to call home.
PS: Vote 1 for Judy Sahayanathan. A voice for change. A leader for Montague Ward.
PSS: Yes, let’s be clear. If we don’t act now, we risk losing our weekly rubbish collection and seeing more decisions
made without us. I won’t let that happen. Vote for the candidate standing up for Montague’s future.
