No Pride on Sundays and public holidays

Pride Centre will be closed on Sundays and Public holidays from this month unless a public event is scheduled.

The Pride Centre has announced it will be closed on Sundays and Public Holidays, unless a public event is scheduled.

The new of the closure prompted owners of Hares & Hyenas bookshop (located within the Centre) to take to Facebook with a plea for help.

“After an exciting first 18 months at the Victorian Pride Centre, Hares & Hyenas is experiencing a tough time. The number of people visiting the Centre has fallen, which has meant less sales for the shop.

“From the start of 2025, the VPC has decided to close on Sundays and public holidays, due to the cost of security and reduced visitors, whilst working on a plan to create a more vibrant environment during its opening hours.

“VPC has been supportive financially but the dramatic change to our trading means that we are experiencing a challenging period to our cash flow.”

Please focus on what we do, rather than what we don’t

TWiSK approached the Pride Centre for more details and a spokesperson replied with this message:

‘Right now, the Victorian Pride Centre is buzzing with energy as we celebrate Midsumma Festival. Our program is packed with vibrant events, exhibitions, performances, and community gatherings, making it the perfect time to visit and experience the Pride Centre at its best.

‘Hares and Hyenas remains a key part of this energy, offering a space for LGBTQIA+ literature, storytelling, and connection. With so much happening at VPC, it’s a great opportunity for visitors to explore, engage, and support one of our community’s most beloved bookstores.’

They offered to share details of events with TWiSK, and we’ll share them with you – as we do already.
