Police statement on local crime statistics

The Crime Statistics Agency released its latest crime data earlier this month. Statewide it found a 1% decline in reported crime in the year to 31 March 2026. TWiSK has the local data and an official statement from VicPol.

Statement from Victoria Police

“While there was only a slight increase in criminal offences in St Kilda, the reality is that overall crime remains far higher than both police and the community would like.

This is why we are absolutely committed to ensuring our highly trained officers are where they are needed most – in the community, patrolling the streets, deterring criminal behaviour and preventing crime.

This approach is pivotal to reducing serious and violent crime, which we are focused on.

The early indications are we’re making some positive steps to achieve this with burglary and theft offences starting to reduce.

Pleasingly, there was a 56% decrease in aggravated home burglaries. This can be attributed to more residents taking precautionary measures such as locking their doors and windows and installing security cameras.

Additionally, thefts from cars have decreased by 14%, however, this offence remains the most common crime in St Kilda.

Vehicle owners are reminded to lock their doors and not leave valuables in plain sight to deter opportunistic thieves.

Our dedicated officers continue to work extremely hard around-the-clock to protect the community, with a record number of offenders arrested every day.”

FYI

The three most common crimes in St Kilda are:

  1. Theft from motor vehicle.
  2. Theft (other) — most commonly involving a wallet or phone being stolen after the owner puts it down, rather than a robbery.
  3. Criminal damage, despite a 17% decrease in this offence.
