Excitement is building at St Kilda City Football Club following a highly successful preseason across all programs, with the men’s seniors, reserves, and women’s teams all showing promising signs ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The club has taken significant strides over the off-season, bolstering its senior list with key inclusions and welcoming a fresh voice at the helm. Among the standout recruits is Dae Szydlik, a familiar name returning to his junior club. His leadership qualities have already been recognised, earning him the role of co-captain alongside Paul Peckaj. The duo will undoubtedly play a crucial role in driving standards and setting the tone for the season.
Adding further strength to the club is new senior coach Ezra Poyas. A respected figure within the club, Poyas was part of St Kilda City’s last premiership side in 2010 and went on to claim the prestigious Ellis Medal as the fairest and best player of the SFNL’s first division. His return brings not only experience, but a deep understanding of a winning culture at St Kilda City.
The positive preseason momentum lifted to another level, when all three teams travelled to East Sunbury of the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) for a series of practice matches across the last Saturday of March. The results reflected the hard work put in over recent months. The reserves delivered a strong performance in wet conditions, leading from start to finish to secure a convincing five-goal victory, while the senior side coming off a grand final appearance in 2025 showcased their cohesive and exciting play style, edging out East Sunbury in a solid 66–38 win.
Although the women’s team fell short on the scoreboard, they put forward a well-rounded team performance that was full of promise. With an impressive four first-time players and nine debutants taking the field, the match served as an important step in building depth and experience within the squad. The blend of fresh talent and developing chemistry suggests the group is well-positioned for a competitive season ahead.
With strong leadership, an influx of talent, and encouraging early results, St Kilda City enters the new season with confidence and clear momentum across all programs.
