Council has announced the change after the Socceroos qualified for the FIFA World Cup knockout stages, honouring Melbourne City goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
The beach will carry its new name for the rest of Australia’s campaign, while St Kilda Town Hall will be lit green and gold tonight (Friday).
Mayor Alex Makin said the move was a local way to back the national team.
Plans are also underway for a Patrick Beach mural, giving fans a photo-ready backdrop during the campaign.
Melbourne City FC chief executive Brad Rowse said having a beach renamed after one of the club’s players was unexpected, “but we’re happy to take it”.
Kids can get involved through the Melbourne City Football School winter holiday camps at JL Murphy Reserve in Port Melbourne.
The camps are scheduled for:
- 29–30 June
- 6–7 July
